Wisconsin Black Bear Killed By Combine

Posted by MikeAdams on December 22, 2008

What does a combine and a black bear have in common?  Nothing usually, but apparently on November 26 they had a corn field in common.      When Neil Schlough took his combine to harvest a cornfield 20 miles north of Menomonie Wisconsin he bumped into what he thought was a dead cow.  Instead he found what was a hibernating black bear and a big one at that!  Apparently the bear had dug a pit about 18 inches deep to sleep the winter away, that is where Schlough’s combine hit the bear and killed it.

When he hit it the combine pushed the bear about 6 feet before he got the equipment stopped.  That is when he found out it was a bear not a cow like he first thought.  Now you have to imagine just how big this thing is to look like a cow!  It measured 7 feet long and after being field dressed it weighed 618 lbs!  It is estimated that it would have weighed between 700 – 720 pounds live!   He was definitly corn fed, this one is sure to make the Wisconsin record books!

“He’s going to keep the bear because he’s never had the opportunity, being so busy farming, to do much fishing and hunting,”  His wife said, “He said, ‘I guess I’m better hunting with a combine than with a gun.’”  This according to the report from the Leader-Telegram article.

The Schloughs plan on having a life size mount made of the bear, the only problem is the taxidermist will have to use a grizzly bear form to mount the animal.  The largest black bear mount available isn’t big enough for this Wisconsin bruin!

That is amazing. Can you imagine finding that thing under your combine.

Just out of curiosity–isn’t November 26th a little late in the year to be harvesting corn in Wisconsin? I would think it would be too late here in NJ, let alone that far north. But then again, I’m no farmer.

      That’s some monster, though.

    5. MikeAdams Says:

It is late, but I still see standing corn here in Michigan. We have seen farmers harvesting as late as a couple weeks ago!

    6. Matthew Scheunemann Says:

Farmers want it dry as possible.

    7. Darrel Rundle Says:

This bear has been confiscated by the Wisconsin DNR.

MR Rundle is correct. This farmer allowed hunters from Minn to hunt on his property (says he didn’t no them) ha ha! They shot it with a 7mm rifle and then tried to get a over the counter bear tag. Some guys wait a lifetime for a tag and to have a shot this this type of animal. All parties should be ashamed! including Joe farmer that is picking corn during Wi. deer gun season? Joe farmer and Minn hunters are all in my book. See current issue of Wi. outdoor. Nice try with combine.

    9. James "Black Bear" Mann Says:

Holy crap that’s the biggest black bear I have ever seen. I didn’t realize they could get that huge.

Here in New Brunswick our black bears get about half the size of that big brute.
