The Grand Rapids Press on Thursday reported that the test results from more than 50 deer that were taken from the infected cervid farm in Kent County all came back negative for CWD! That means that the deer that tested positive for the disease is an isolated case according to the officials from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. They are still waiting for additional test results to come back from four other deer that were taken from two other farms in Montcalm and Osceola Counties. They chose these deer for testing because they were transported from the farm with the infected deer.
Deer farmers are hoping that the MDA will lift the quarantine now that this seems to be an isolated case. The MDA shut down more than 550 farms last week when a Kent County captive deer tested positive for CWD.
People wondering why this seems to be such a big deal should know that according to the Grand Rapids Press story, that there are over 26,000 captive deer in Michigan at an estimated worth of almost $54 million.
If the remaining four deer test negative for CWD, the quarantined farms could start up operations again as soon as next week. MDA officials are still working out the details of how the quarantine will be lifted if these deer do indeed come back negative. They are still investigating how this lone deer was contaminated and contracted CWD.
