    Hunters Of The Past

Posted by MikeAdams on August 19, 2008

Yesterday’s blog was about who to take hunting or fishing, Mcain or Obama along with the follow up question about who you would take from the past given the opportunity.  I was pleased to see the responses all of you gave.

What I was really amazed by was all the different responses given about the hunters and sportsmen of the past.  All of you really put some thought into this one and expressed the desire to know and learn from our past outdoorsmen.  All of these pioneers forged a way for us to be able to enjoy the outdoors of today.  Had it not been for them we wouldn’t have the opportunities we do now.  All of these people mentioned in some way or another had a significant impact on our way of life.

These hunters of the past passed on their knowledge to us directly or indirectly.  Now it is YOUR turn!  You can be the outdoorsmen of today that passes that knowledge on to the outdoorsmen of tomorrow.  You can be the Fred Bear, Teddy Roosevelt, etc…. who can and will make a difference.  Even if it is something as small as taking a child out to shoot a bow or gun.  Maybe take them fishing for the first time or hunting for the first time.  If you don’t have kids of your own, find one in your family or group of friends and take them out to enjoy what we have today.  You can also get involved in an outdoor organization that helps to promote or preserve our great outdoor heritage.  These are just some of the ways YOU can become a hunter of the past to the outdoorsmen of tomorrow.

It is always great to try and read or learn as much as we can about these great pioneers, but we need to do something with that knowledge to help the future of our sport.  Remember the kids of today are the outdoorsmen of tomorrow!

Excellent post, and I couldn’t agree more.

In the last two years I have gotten a buddy involved in the outdoors who had never hunted, and now he is bowhunting. I have gotten my cousin out hunting, and she is going out again with me this year. Plus, we have gotten my brother’s stepkids out hunting as well.

It only takes a little bit of time to introduce someone to the outdoors, and I love being able to show them the woods for the first time.

It is definitely worth the effort and could leave a long lasting impression on someone for years to come.

I agree - getting others involved in hunting is important for the future and it just feels good. I’m hoping to do my part!
