    McCain or Obama?

Posted by MikeAdams on August 16, 2008

No this isn’t another blog on who to vote for!

I read this on another blog this week and found it interesting.  If you had the opportunity to go on a hunting or fishing trip of a lifetime and you had to choose from the two presidential candidates (McCain or Obama) to take, who would it be and why?

I had to give this some serious thought.  I guess it would depend on the reason I would choose McCain or Obama to go.  If it was on a big game hunt either in Michigan or some other state I would choose John McCain.  I think as a sportsman he would enjoy the outdoors and company I would have to offer.  I also think I would enjoy his company in the field as well.  I think that any man that has survived a prisoner of war situtation knows how to survive in a life threatening situation.  If I was in the wilderness, I definetly would want him with me, even with his age.  He would have the knowledge of how to survive in a tough situation.

Now if it was for predator or varmit hunting, I would choose Barak Obama.  Most of you probably are wondering why I decided to take him with me!  Well, honestly I think that predator and varmit hunting is a activity that most liberals think isn’t really necessary.  I would like to show him just how many varmits and predators there are running around in the outdoors.  I would also like to teach him why it is necessary to start wildlife management at the bottom of the food chain.  I would like to show just how important it is to help cull the diseased and rabid carrying animals.  Lastly I would like to show just how important it is to use the proper firearm to get the job done properly, instead of labeling most if not all firearms as dangerous or assault type weapons.

Now quite honestly I don’t think I would change his mind, but I would like to give it a try.  Otherwise I would hope to just hang out with McCain.  Maybe even take him on a fishing trip on the Great Lakes to show him just how important our fresh water supply is to the Great Lakes Basin.  This might help to preserve and encourage others to help protect this great resource.  I’m excited to see that the Great Lakes Basin Compact has made its way into law.   Now honestly, if given the chance I would take both of them with me on a hunting or fishing trip.  I would like to show them how the average guy spends his time in the field.  Also to show them just how hard it is in today’s economic times to have enough money to enjoy the outdoors.  It would be nice to let them see just how much a bad economy has effected how much time we spend in the outdoors.

Now if I had one chance to go hunting or fishing with anyone who previously lived in history, other than a relative that has passed on,  it would have to be one of two people.  First would be Fred Bear, I would love to sit with him and just pick his brain to gleen all the knowledge I could from that man!  He has hunted all over the world and taken almost every type of game there is.  I think I could learn a lot from this great archer.  The second would have to be Daniel Boone.  He was a true woodsman and pioneer that saw much adversity.  He knew how to survive and take game with his sharp shooting skills.  A true American who lost everything twice and still managed to survive.  He took his last hunting trip at the young age of 83!  We all could learn a lot from that man!

So lets hear it guys!  Who would you take hunting or fishing with you and why?  Also if you had to choose two people from the past who would it be and why?

Good Topic. I too would take Obama. I don’t think the liberals know or care how much time, dedication and work most hunters, fishermen and trappers take to take care of the outdoors and how much respect we have for it. Another reaon I don’t think McCain could keep up with me. As far as the hunting with someone in the past I would like to hunt with Teddy Roosevelt. He was a blue collar no nonsense man that did alot for conservation, the U.S. and the world. One of the 1st thing he did after his presidental term was up was to go on a African safari, plus that runs on a “bull moose” ticket is gonna be up on my hero list! Best president we have EVER had.

    2. The Adventurist Says:

This is an interesting topic. I would have to go with John McCain. He has some outdoor experience and knows how to handle a gun. (just a guess) I would be to worried that Obama would go “Cheney” on me if I expressed my views about certain topics.

Who would I like to most hunt with in the past, that isn’t a relative? Ernest Hemingway. That may sound a bit strange, but his life was always an adventure–and plus he could keep me entertained with his tales. I have read someplace that he was quite a storyteller..haha. He was definitely in to some big game hunting, especially in Africa, which I have always thought would be fun.

    3. Arthur Says:

Hmm…I’m going to go with McCain as well. I don’t think the liberal minded Obama could handle even ten minutes of hanging out with me:)

As for the past-I definitely would choose exactly who you did. I would love to pick Fred’s brain for just 10 minutes. The wealth of knowledge that he would have would just be amazing. A true legend.

    4. timaford Says:

That is a good question. I think I would choose Obama simply for the fact of trying to educate him to our way of life. Although there would be on rule for the hunt and that would be no talking about politics at all.

As for the past I would choose two people. They would be Fred Bear and Teddy Roosevelt. Like everyone else I would love to pick Fred Bear’s brain and I would love to sit and talk conservation with Teddy Roosevelt.

    5. Tom Sorenson Says:

Why ruin a good hunt by involving politics?!

Now I’ll contradict that statement by saying if I could take two people from the past on a hunting trip - I would take Teddy Roosevelt and Jack O’Connor.

    6. Rob Leigh Says:

I’m impressed by some of the responses here. The fact that you’d choose to educate rather than attack shows real character.

I’m guessing that unlike most of you, my politics are left of center. Depending on the issue, I can be either conservative, liberal or libertarian, but I very rarely vote Republican. But I am a gun-owner, and have been an outdoorsman my whole life.

I’d take both men. I’d like Obama to know the importance of the hunting & fishing heritage of this country, as well as how vital it is to preserve our Second Amendment rights. I like to remind him that these beliefs are not exclusive to conservatives.

I’d like to stress to McCain the importance of continuing to protect our environment. After all, without a healthy habitat, there’d be nothing for us to hunt and fish.

If I could hunt with anyone, I’d like to have been a member of the Ishi/Kroeber hunting party around 1914–one of the members was Dr. Saxton Pope (later of Pope & Young). It’d be something to participate in the moment that the last “wild” American Indian passed the torch to the man who would later become the father of modern bowhunting.

Tough call. I think hunting with McCain would be more of a laid back, stories by the fire type of hunt. Obama would be another story…his life story seems to change an awful lot but it wouldn’t hurt to show him what it means to be out doors.

While Fred Bear would definately be interesting I think that I would like to hunt with an early American Indian hunter. There are a number of famous ones but I’d rather hunt with one who realy understood the land and what it means to share your life with the world around you.

    8. Bill Says:

I’d take stephen colbert and I would probably take mike gravel because he would know where to score some weed.

    9. Bob Rich Says:

Easy one. I’d take Obama. Hunting accidents do happen you know. I’d take Hitler as well.

    10. Mark in Ohio Says:

Just read this…thanks. I’d take Obama…he’s never been hunting and he talks about guns a lot. I know that Obama says he supports hunting and fishing and I just want to make sure he gets what it’s like to sit in a stand for a while or to spend a whole day without getting off a shot and still thinking it was a day well spent. I love hunting and I love America. John McCain frankly scares me.

As for history, I guess I’d want to go with Teddy Roosevelt or maybe Audubon. He was a good hunter and knew a lot about so many species.
