    Caution, Person Hunting

Posted by MikeAdams on August 15, 2008

A friend of mine out east has run into a few problems lately trying to hunt public land.  Bob Rich of the Bob Rich Shooting Journal hunts small game on a small tract of public land.

When afield he often finds himself face to face with pedetrians either strolling the woods, walking their dogs, or even riding their atv (which is illegal there).  As you can imagine these activities often ruin or at least disturb his hunt.  Now people strolling the wildlife area is completely legal, but he and I have tried to come up with a solution that might warn or deter people from taking a stroll through a hunting area.

What he was wondering, first is, if it is legal to post a sign in or on your vehicle to warn those people entering the parking area that there is a hunter in the woods.  He did contact the Connecticut DEP and found that it is legal to do so, as long as it isn’t alarming in nature.

We have discussed this option, but he thought that this might cause someone to activily harrass or vandalize his vehicle.  So now I present this to you the readers, is this a viable option or would you persue this situation differently?

Now remember last week I wrote a post on a situation he had where people walked in on him during an active hunt.  He later confronted the family and kindly explained the situation and just how dangerous it was to be walking in a wildlife area where hunting takes place.  So with all of the vast hunting knowledge everyone has, lets here the suggestions to help him out!

      This is a hard one.

I think there needs to be some sort of system where signs are posted to let the “strollers” know that hunting is taking place. That seems like the best option to me.

Most public hunting areas (at least in Michigan)have a registration station by the entrance. It may be a shack that is manned or it could be just a box on a post. Either way, a simple flag on the side could let people know if the woods are being hunted at that time. Kind of like the flags you see on the sides of mail boxes, but bigger. As you enter the woods, you raise the flag, and as you leave, you lower it. Four flags on the lesser hunted spots and maybe more on the healily hunted areas. This would also give you an idea of how heavily the area is being hunted. If you know the area is 20 acers and you see 4 flags up, you might think twice befor heading in and find another spot.

Fortunately I haven’t had many problems with this hunting the state game areas in southern michigan. I don’t how well a notification in your vehical would work state game areas that I hunt becuase there are many different little parking spots so chances are nobody would see it. Although there are signs posted by the DNR all over the place that the land is open for to hunting so anybody on that land should expect that.
