Another Cougar In Michigan?

Posted by MikeAdams on July 3, 2008

On June 30th in Iron Mountain, Michgian which is in the U.P. of Michigan, Laurie Michaud saw what she described as a huge cat in the downtown area around 5am.  According to WLUC TV 6’s website, she said it looked like a cat and was about the size of a dog with a long tail about the length of the animal.

She told authorities that she chased the animal across the parking lot and it ran across the highway and out of site.  There are no photos to confirm her sighting, but the Michigan DNR did confirm cougar tracks in the U.P.’s Delta county earlier this year.  Although she has no actual proof, it isn’t out of the relm of possibilities.  Authorities reassured the public that there isn’t reason for alarm, but if someone is fortunate enough to see something, they should call police.  The last reported cougar kill in the state of Michigan was in the town of Newberry in 1906.

Just last week, an old photo of a dead cougar with hunter posing with it began to circulate around the Michigan area again.  It was long ago confirmed that this cat was taken out west some where.  The story goes that it was hit by a car on M-65 near Alpena in Michigan.

It must be cougar story time again this year.  Not to say they don’t exist here in Michigan.  With all of the sightings, there has to be some sort of truth to some of these stories.  But this photo definitly isn’t one of them.

That is one big kitty! I hope for y’alls sake that Michigan doesn’t have cougars coming into your state - however, I gotta think it’s just a matter of time, unfortunately.

My question has always been,”Why doesn’t the DNR want to admit that we have cougars in Michigan?” I have heard that question asked many times to different DNR personnel and they never answer it. I have a feeling that it has to do with money becuase I believe that if they admit that there are cougars her in Michigan then I believe that would be required to have to manage them like the wolfs. But then again I could be wrong and totally off base. Personally I believe that there are cougars in Michigan based on the reports and such that has been confirmed. As to whether or not there is a breeding population that remains to be seen.

The unfortunate thing is there are people out there who distort truth and this is part of what makes the DNR take it’s time checking and researching things before they fall to a hoax. Likely there are a few cougars in Michigan but they are not rampant enough for people to get them on video or have multiple sightings yet. It may never get to that point either.

That photo was circulated all over the place.

I do think that cougars exist in Michigan. I just wish that someone would get some solid evidence to prove that point.
