Predatory Birds

This week a friend of mine out east had the chance to get into the woods for the Connecticut spring coyote hunt. He set up his squirrel tail decoy and proceeded to call.
As his story goes, all of a sudden he saw two hawks swoop down and then he heard a squirrel tearing down a tree. The hawks came back and snagged the squirrel! Last year during bow season my oldest son had the rare opportunity to watch the same thing happen. While sitting in his tree stand and watching a huge fox squirrel, out of no where a hawk swooped down and snatched up the squirrel and flew into a nearby tree with it.
Such sights are rare for those who don’t venture into the woods that much. Even if we are out quite a bit, it is still an uncommon sight. I just wish some of those animal lovers could get the chance to see this happen once in their lives. They might change their mind about hunting. They say we are cruel for hunting, they should watch one of those hawks snag a squirrel and carry it away screaming, then sit in a tree and eat it! Nature is down right cruel in some intstances.
It is still a sight to see nature working right in front of your eyes. Somethings we take for granted (like our next meal), with the walk through a field or in the woods, our thoughts on that subject can be changed forever. We hunt for the pleasure of getting out doors and relaxing, with the possiblility of taking game along the way. With predators, their hunting is a matter of life and death each and every time they venture out. The life and death could be the game they are after, or it could be their own life that falls into some other animals jaws!
The next time you are in the woods or out in the field, take a few moments to just sit and watch nature at work. You just might be surprised at what you see.

That’s awesome! One of the many perks to spending so much time outdoors - you ust never know what you might see next.

I watched a hawk try and do the same thing last year and miss. It was a tremendous sound and something I will never forget.
