Ladies Day Out! - Hooks & Bullets - Follow us through the woods and waters of Michigan

    Ladies Day Out!

Posted by MikeAdams on May 17, 2008

Two of my favorite ladies spent the day out doing some shooting and learning about the great outdoors today.  Recently I wrote about the Camo and Lace Spring Fling event that was being held in our area.  My better half finally agreed to take our oldest daughter (Mackenzie, 10) to this event.  I was anxiously awaiting their return today, and not knowing what to expect, I thought the worst as my mind conjoured up all kinds of crazy thoughts.  I could just hear my wife yelling at me as she walked through the door, “what were you thinking by sending me to something like that?”  I fully expected something to go wrong.  Boy was I wrong!

When they arrived home after the event, they were both smiles and giggles.  It was as if they spent the day shopping at the mall with my credit card with no limit!  I wasn’t really sure that these were the two same ladies I sent out to the event this morning.  Low and behold they both had an awesome time.  Now you must know that my wife knows nothing about the great outdoors, shooting, or hunting, and she really didn’t care if she ever did.  But my daughter on the other hand is a little Annie Oakley.  She can shoot like nobody’s business and loves to hunt and fish.  She one day wants to be a veternarian.

hunting-and-ice-fishing-2008-258a.jpg     They chose four out of the ten events that were offered to attend.  The first being hunting-and-ice-fishing-2008-261a.jpgbeginners ATV Riding, second was Yoga (why this was an outdoor event I don’t know), the third was Beginners Handgun Shooting, and the last being Custom Game Calls.  They found all four to be extremely entertaining and fun.  Most of the comments were about the last two events.  According to my wife, the handgun trainer was amazed at my ten year old daughter’s safe firearm handling skills along with her shooting ability.  I think she takes after her dad!  Apparently I now have to purchase two .22 caliber pistols for the ladies to shoot with!  The last class was quite interesting according to the both of them.

hunting-and-ice-fishing-2008-278a.jpg     Bryan Stanley of Double Coyotee Predator Calls, showed the ladies how to use a game call along with how he made them.  My daughter Mackenzie won a $50 custom predator distress call because she was the only one there that could duplicate the same sounds on the call as Mr. Stanley.  Once again she takes after her dad!  She also got the chance to use a custom made call that he had yet to send out to the customer.  It was an acrylic coyote howler made for hunting-and-ice-fishing-2008-275a.jpg“Kid Rock”!  He was also making one for Hank Willams Jr.

So now I have my daughter running around calling in coyotes and her and my wife both wanting .22 caliber pistols.  I guess they both want to shoot the coyotes that Mackenzie is going to call in!  I have truly created a monster!  But it is one that I think I can handle.

That’s great! Get em involved early and get ‘em hooked on the outdoors. A great event. Who put it on? It’d be cool for someone in this area to put something like that together. I’m going to have to check into that!

Good to see hear that the ladies had a good time. I love it when my wife hunts and shoots with me. It’s a great family activity, and here pretty soon I hope to get my soon to be first born involved. I can’t wait to show my kids the outdoors.

As a member of Camo & Lace, I’d like to thank “your girls” for making our day a sweet success. Our goal and motto is “Putting the Mother Back in Nature”. Knowing that you are active in getting your family involved in the Michigan Hunting Heritage is gratifying. Mackenzie is a great asset to your family and a role model for other young women in Michigan. It is also a blessing to know that your daughter is not afraid of firearms and has the knowledge she needs to be safe around them. Kudos to you and your wife for teaching and supporting her!
I asked my Dad why he never took me hunting? His answer was: “You never asked.” I’m sorry for not asking and waiting until I was in my late 20’s to even try. I never shot a firearm hunting until I was 56. Without the support of Camo & Lace, I probably would not be having such a great adventure with the hunting experience. Thank you for sending a part of your family to our event. PS: Yoga can be done outdoors too.
