Weakly Bass Found Dead
Posted by MikeAdams on May 15, 2008
Two years ago Mac Weakly caught what could have potentially been the new world record bass at 25.1 lbs. The problem it was foul hooked and the weight he reported was not off of a certified scale. So rather start a huge controversy he simply took photos and released it back into Lake Dixon in California. The next two years Weakly tried to catch the fish again, but with no avail. Everyone for miles around knew that the fish was still in those waters and it actually became quite famous. This last friday what everyone has called the Weakly Bass, was found dead floating on the surface of the lake. Mac Weakly actually identified the fish as the one he caught two years ago from a distinguishing black mark below its gil line. When it was weighed it tipped the scales at only 19 lbs., they figured that the fish had been dead for about 24 hours. State Game officials will do an autopsy on the fish to see if they can obtain any useful information from this beastly fish. They also determined that the fish had just finished spawning. Maybe there are some new potential world records in Lake Dixon just waiting to grow up! Photo courtesy of mossyoak.com

I saw this a couple of other places as well. That is one incredible fish.

I must commend the guy for letting it go when it was fouled hooked. I would have done the same thing but there are many people out there that wouldn’t and would keep the fish. It sure was a beautiful fish.

I know it must have been hard to let the fish go…that really stinks that it could have been a world record fish. Maybe his twin brother is still swimming in the around!
