Ground Hog Facts
Posted by MikeAdams on May 15, 2008
I came across a post on a forum this week concerning ground hogs. A hunter was out in the woods hunting wild turkey here in Michigan, when he heard a bird like sound. He kept hearing it off and on for a while. When he had finished hunting he began to investigate what was making the odd noise. He followed the sound until he came upon a tree and found a ground hog about 30 feet up in the tree! Now I have never heard a ground hog make noise before and I sure didn’t know they could climb. Evidently they can and do climb and make sounds. Other people on the forum confirmed what the origional person had posted on the forum. One guy stated that in his home state of Kentucky that they were called whistle pigs because of the odd sound they make. Others mentioned they too had seen them climb trees before.
Just a couple of little known facts about those pesky varmits the ground hogs!

This is so weird. I just had a friend telling me the other day that woodchucks could climb trees, and I thought he was crazy. He said he wouldn’t of believed it either, except for last year he had one cross in front of him in the woods and then disappear. Upon further investigation he found it up on the limb of a tree.
Pesky little buggers!

I’d love to drop a chuck out of a tree. I love the ‘THUD!’ when a squirrel drops from the top of a tree. This would make even a bigger ‘THUD!’ Is this a local chuck custom or do they climb in CT as well?
